Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate (STS)
- A sclerosing solution
- A detergent solution (the three categories of sclerosing agents are:
detergent, osmotic, or chemical)
- Brands are Sotradecol and Fibro-Vein
Mechanism of action of Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate
- Endothelial damage is dependent on concentration
- Occurs immediately after injection
- Results in rapid thrombus formation
- Ideal concentrations depend on vessel diameter, rate of blood flow, and
anatomic region.
Patient Pre-Sclerotherapy Instructions
Before your Appointment
- Do NOT take aspirin or other blood thinning drugs
(Vitamin E, Gingko Bilboa), ibuprofen, or other non-stedoid inflammatory
drugs (Arthritis Medication, etc.) for 2 days before and 2 days after your
treatment because these medications can increase bruising.
- If you take birth control pills or estrogen, inform the sclerotherapist
about it.
- We recommend not to drink alcoholic beverages and not to smoke for 2
days before and 2 days after your treatment because drinking alcohol and
smoking may impair healing.
- Do Not apply any cream, lotion, oil, or self-tanners to
your legs the night before or the day of your treatment.
