In addition to superb surgical skills, our focus is communication. Many of our consultations take about an hour to ensure that we become partners in your surgery and that we share the same goals. Our patients have access to our cell phones to call with any questions, and email is also a possible means of communication. We are very technology savvy, in fact this web page is made by Dr. Calvin Lee. Our technology advantage also helps us in your surgical / medical care. We only use the highest grade technology and materials in our practice. This high quality standard and accepting nothing less is our philosophy for our family, for our lives, and for our patients.
There are many other advantages of having a plastic surgeon and general surgeon working together. The practice gets a fusion of ideas and techniques that benefit our patients. For example, for breast cancer, Dr. Calvin Lee and Dr. Tammy Wu frequently work together to remove the cancer and then reconstruct the breast. The doctors are always discussing ways to combine their talents. This hybridized surgical group is a very unique combination which ultimately benefits our patients. Even more special is the addition of Dr. Calvin Lee's acupuncture knowledge which adds a holistic and more natural approach to healing from your surgery.
If you are committed to self improvement and excellent health; Surgical Artistry is committed to helping you achieve your goals.
We specialize in minimally invasive vein procedures, and cosmetic vein procedures - especially with our association with Dr. Tammy Wu - Plastic Surgeon.
Spider veins can be treated with sclerotherapy (we use Asclera) injections or surface laser treatments.
Larger veins on the other hand may require surgical phlebectomy, where very small incisions about 1 mm are made and the vein is surgically removed.
We have a state of the art ultrasound machine that can help determine if you have reflux in your veins that may require endovenous laser ablation of slightly deeper veins called the saphenous veins (greater and lesser saphenous veins). These saphenous veins are at times, the source of new varicose and spider veins.
After your treatment, we would recommend that you wear a medical grade support hose to help keep the veins compressed for the next few days. Many vein procedures done at our vein clinic allow a rapid return to normal activities.
The usual cost of a vein consultation is $200, which is not applied to the procedure but includes a possible ultrasound of the legs. If it is just facial veins, the consultation is is also $200 (which is also not applied to the procedure). Please see the section right below this on costs of vein procedures. Please call our office because websites can become outdated and we would have updated prices over the phone.
Call us for an appointment with Dr. Calvin Lee for a vein clinic consultation 209-551-1888. It would be most convenient if you brought shorts to wear.
This varies with severity of the disease. Insurances may pay for those veins that are associated with symptoms and/or associated with reflux as found on our vein duplex ultrasound. Unfortunately, we do not currently accept insurances at our office. Spider veins are the small veins found on the surface of the legs that are usually not raised.
The cost of spider vein surgery / vein injections / vein laser is around $450-$600 for the first session of treatment for each segment of the leg; for example: left thigh. Most subsequent sessions would be about $350. The next great question is, how many sessions will I need to get rid of the veins. It also varies depending on size of the veins, the quality and quantity of compression offered by the support hose after the vein procedure. We have seen them disappear after the first treatment - however keep in mind that the healing time can be from 1-3 months, but we have also seen them require about three-six treatments. A nice rule of thumb is that 40-60% of the veins which are treated, disappear with each treatment.
Facial veins on the side of the nose are about $75 (in addition to the consultation fee and may be up to $250 for more extensive veins) for a treatment. Sometimes they disappear after one treatment and many times it takes 3-4 times to treat these veins.
We perform a wide variety of medical and surgical procedures and treat many diseases. We have the ultimate goal of improving your health, energy, and happiness. Varicose veins are usually raised and much larger than spider veins (telangiectasias). There's in between veins called reticular veins. It's worthwhile looking at the pictures.
Bringing or wearing short pants is the most convenient; otherwise we have gowns you can change into. After filling out initial questionnaires and medical paperwork, your veins will be examined for any signs of skin change, and for the extent and the size will be measured. Edema in your legs will be assessed as well. An ultrasound with duplex capabilities will be brought into the room and your saphenous veins will be assessed while you are in a standing position. These veins run in the inside of the legs and back of the legs. Then we will have a discussion on the different modalities that would be used (sclerotherapy injections, surface laser, intralumenal laser, or phlebectomy - vein removal) to help you. Pictures would also be taken of your veins. Then there would be a discussion of the pricing and the possible involvement of insurance. The evaluation, ultrasound, pictures and discussion will take about 30 minutes. Vein injections, vein removals, and other procedures on your veins will not usually be done on the same visit. However, if you are very interested in having your vein procedures done during the first visit, let us know and we'll make this happen for you.
¨ What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged veins that appear twisted and bulging. They are usually swollen and raised above the skin’s surface.
¨ What causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins are caused by many factors including heredity, pregnancy, hormonal changes, being overweight, standing or sitting for long periods of time, advancing age or injury to the vein.
¨ What are the symptoms of varicose veins?
Symptoms may include the following: aching or burning in the legs, swelling of the legs or ankles, leg cramps or sores, itching of the skin around the vein, and open wounds such as skin ulcers around the ankle.
¨ What are the treatment options to eliminate varicose veins?
There are many treatment options for varicose veins. Along with the minimally invasive endovenous laser treatment, there are several more invasive alternatives. They include ligation and stripping, or a phlebectomy. Due to the surgical nature of these treatments, recovery time can be up to four weeks. The potential risks and side effects also are higher with these options.
¨ What is the endovenous laser treatment?
The endovenous laser treatment, using the Dornier D940 laser is a safe and highly effective treatment for varicose veins. This procedure is usually performed in a physician’s office, typically using tumescent anesthesia. You can usually return to work the next day, with minimal post-procedure discomfort.
¨ How long will the procedure take?
The procedure usually lasts for about 30-60 minutes for the endovenous laser.
¨ Will I have to be treated at the hospital?
No. The endovenous laser treatment is a non-invasive procedure which can be performed in your doctor’s office.
¨ How soon after will I be able to walk after the procedure?
You will be encouraged to walk immediately after the completion of the procedure.
¨ How long will I have to be out of work?
You can return to work the day after the procedure, unless otherwise instructed by your physician.
¨ How soon will it take for my symptoms to disappear?
The symptoms should begin to disappear immediately following the procedure.
¨ Will there be any scarring from the procedure?
No. Due to the small size of the catheter insertion point, most patients do not experience any scarring at all.
¨ Is the endovenous procedure covered by my insurance?
Yes. Most insurance companies cover the procedure. Your physician can discuss your eligibility with you when discussing your treatment plan.

I have many interests besides vein surgery and vein treatments (our plastic surgery center loves veins, cosmetic vein surgeries & other vein problems). I believe that a well rounded individual has many avenues of knowledge to draw upon to increase one's ability to succeed in any particular field. For example, the discipline learned from practicing violin can be applied to the dexterity of surgery.
I really enjoy my practice of medicine and I hope
you would enjoy your experience in our office.
Alternative spellings for varicose veins:
vericose veins, verricose veins, varricose vanes, vericose viens.
Some of my other interests as seen by my
other webpages (not all related to
big veins, ie. planting
lavender plants / bushes).
